If you’ve ever shopped for an article of clothing online, you probably appreciate standards. Especially if you’re a woman. Medium and large are very subjective, and if you’re tall, getting those ankles and wrists covered can be a struggle. This is where we can see that there are very little to no industry standards which can and do cause consumer headaches. Thankfully, IT is rife with standards, and that’s a very good thing.

I think we can all agree that there is no business without IT. And, given that, there are two general states of being when considering your IT; it’s either “I can do my job pretty effortlessly” (in which case it’s because your IT is totally killing it) or “this. is. going. to. kill. me.”, in which case, well, you know.

There was a time when a phone was just that, a phone. You had your home phone, your office phone, your home office phone, and if you were fancy, your car phone. If people wanted to reach you, they had to take measurements of the time of day and circumstances of the moment to estimate the best number at which to reach you.

Most small business owners will say the same thing; they started their business knowing their industry but not much else. Owning a business is one of the most brutal School of Hard Knocks in which people will willingly enroll. And while some are at graduate level, most are still taking the 101’s. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that one of the most important aspects of running a business is not practiced by many; establishing and keeping an eye on metrics.

Fairly recently, MSPs have taken to touting their ROI. Admittedly, we ran with this fad as well. At one time we even had an ROI calculator available to users on our site. It wasn’t very popular as it was very rarely used. And once we pulled away from the trees, we saw the forest for what it was. We were offering people a tool they didn’t need, a calculator for numbers they didn’t have. Genius!

It seems amazing what our passwords protect. From our accounts to social media accounts where our internet personas share interests and opinions with people we will never physically meet, to our vital information that gain us access to our life savings and even proof of citizenship. It seems almost like a science fiction story; villains sitting behind glowing boxes using sophisticated methods to guess the “open sesame” to our lives.
